The Problem With Synthetic Swimwear in Extreme Temperatures

Most swimwear is designed for one thing: looking good poolside. When you take it into a 38°C sauna or a 10°C cold plunge, it's just along for the ride — offering no thermal benefit whatsoever.

Synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester are essentially plastic. They trap heat inconsistently, hold onto moisture, and in high-heat environments like saunas, can off-gas trace chemicals you'd rather not have against your skin.

Merino wool works differently. And the reason comes down to fibre biology.

How Merino Wool Actually Regulates Temperature

Merino fibres are hygroscopic — meaning they actively absorb and release moisture in response to the humidity around them. This isn't a coating or a treatment that washes out. It's how the fibre is built at a cellular level.

Here's what that means in practice:

  • In a cold plunge: The fibre traps a thin layer of warmth against your skin, slowing the rate at which cold water pulls heat away from your body. You still feel the cold — that's the point — but the shock is moderated.
  • In a sauna or steam room: Merino absorbs moisture vapour from the air and from your skin as you sweat, releasing it gradually. This creates a natural evaporative cooling effect, keeping you more comfortable as the temperature rises.
  • Moving between the two: This is where synthetic fabrics fail entirely. Going from hot to cold in polyester is a jarring, clammy experience. Merino self-regulates continuously, adapting to each new environment rather than fighting it.

The Science: Moisture Absorption vs. Moisture Wicking

There's an important distinction worth understanding here.

Most performance sportswear is marketed on wicking — moving sweat away from your skin to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates. This works reasonably well in a single, stable environment.

Merino wool absorbs moisture into the fibre itself — up to 35% of its own weight in water vapour — before it even feels wet. As it does this, it releases a small amount of heat (a process called heat of sorption), which contributes to that sensation of warmth in cold conditions. When the environment changes and humidity drops, it releases that moisture gradually.

This dual-direction regulation is why merino is used in everything from base layers for Antarctic expeditions to luxury spa robes — it's one of the few natural fibres that performs in both directions.

Why This Matters for Swimwear Specifically

The spa and wellness circuit — saunas, cold plunges, hot springs, steam rooms — is increasingly part of how people train and recover. And yet almost no swimwear is designed for it.

Wearing swimm's merino wool in this environment means:

  • No synthetic fabric against your skin in high heat
  • A fibre that actively responds to temperature change rather than ignoring it
  • The same piece works from the cold plunge pool to the hot room and back again — no changing, no second outfit

It's not magic. It's just a very old fibre doing what it evolved to do.
