What Is Self-Lining?
Self-lining means the swimwear is lined with the same fabric it's made from — in swimm's case, merino wool throughout. There's no separate synthetic lining sewn in. The inner and outer layers are the same material.
It's a construction detail that most people never think about — until they've worn it.
Why Most Swimwear Uses Synthetic Lining (And Why That's a Problem)
Standard swimwear — even premium pieces — typically uses a thin nylon or polyester lining regardless of what the outer fabric is. This keeps costs down and is easy to work with at scale.
The problem: you end up with two different fabrics behaving differently against your skin. The lining sits directly against your body, so its properties — how it feels, how it manages moisture, how it responds to heat — matter more than the outer fabric.
If the outer layer is merino but the lining is polyester, you've lost most of the benefit. You're back to synthetic against skin.
Why Self-Lining in Merino Changes Everything

Moisture-wicking synthetics like polyester and nylon are engineered to pull sweat away from your skin and push it to the fabric's surface, where it evaporates. In a single, stable environment — say, a temperature-controlled gym — this works reasonably well.
The problem is what happens when conditions change. Wicking fabrics move moisture in one direction and stop there. Once the fabric is saturated, or the environment shifts from hot to cold, they have no further response. The moisture sits on the surface, the fabric clings, and in cold environments it actively pulls heat away from your body.
Merino works differently. It absorbs moisture vapour into the fibre itself — before it even becomes surface sweat — and releases it gradually as conditions change. This creates a natural evaporative cooling effect during high output, and a buffering effect when you move into a cooler environment. The fibre is continuously responding rather than simply moving moisture along.
The key is that merino doesn't insulate the way a knit wool jumper does. The fabric weight used in swimwear is lightweight and open enough to breathe. It moderates temperature rather than retaining it.
